Between March 2020 and August 2025, the number of restaurants in the UK shrunk by more than 14 per cent following a wave of shocks. This is a situation that continues into 2026, with restaurants facing soaring costs for labour, energy and materials, among other things.
Despite this, the industry has seen strong levels of M&A activity, with takeovers of UK restaurant groups up by 88 per cent last year, according to one report.
