A South West-based waste management and recycling business has agreed to sell its Oxfordshire operations to a family-owned company as it seeks to refocus on growth opportunities in its core markets.
The deal sees McCarthy Marland’s waste transfer station in Wantage, along with its associated collection operations, sold to Smiths (Gloucester) Limited. The transfer of the operations took place on September 18 2026.
Smiths has been operating across the South West and Wales since 1982, offering services including demolition, construction, asbestos removal, transport and plant hire and skip and commercial waste management.
Alex Marland, director of McCarthy Marland, said: "We are delighted to have found such a strong new home for our Oxfordshire operations in Smiths, a well-established family business with an excellent reputation in the industry.”
"The sale allows us to focus on our core markets which are serviced by our Bristol, Tetbury (Gloucestershire) and Somerton (Somerset) locations, where we see significant opportunities for continued growth.”
Marland added that the firm was confident that the Wantage site’s team and customer base would continue to be well served by Smiths following the sale.
Smiths (Gloucester) Limited director Paul Smith said that the acquisition represented “an exciting step forward for our business and strengthens our presence in Oxfordshire and the surrounding areas.”
He continued: “We are delighted to welcome the employees and customers to Smiths and look forward to building on the strong reputation and relationships that have been established. Together, we are well positioned to continue delivering high-quality, sustainable waste management solutions for our customers."
The sale of McCarthy Marland’s Oxfordshire operations comes approximately four months after the company secured an £11.25 million finance package from Arbuthnot Commercial Asset Based Lending, which refinanced the company’s existing facilities and created working capital headroom for future investment and growth.
