pureLiFi, a wireless communications company based in Edinburgh, has fallen into administration, with administrators now marketing the company’s assets, including its intellectual property portfolio, for sale.
Founded in 2012, pureLiFi developed an alternative wireless communications technology to 5G and wifi using light. The Leith-headquartered company’s proprietary LiFi technology is a system that uses light to transmit data, as opposed to radio frequencies, with a focus on secure wireless communications.
Initially a technology developer, the company evolved into a manufacturer of products built around its portfolio of intellectual property. However, while it attracted investment in excess of £35 million from a wide range of investors, funds and banks, it was unable to secure the capital required for its operations to be sustained.
According to administrators, despite years of technological development and significant investment, the company had struggled to achieve profitability. A strategic decision to manufacture hardware products, rather than licensing its patented technology to third-party manufacturers, was described as having proved more expensive than anticipated.
The administrators said that efforts to secure additional investment proved unsuccessful, with the directors subsequently deciding to place the company into administration at the end of last month.
One of the joint administrators for the company stated: “The firm had received significant investment from numerous sources over the years, and despite creating products and generating revenue with some groundbreaking proprietary wireless technology, the business simply ran out of money before it could cross into profitability.”
“A strategic shift into manufacturing its own hardware, rather than licensing its globally patented technology to third-party manufacturers, was more costly than initially anticipated. By the end of Q2 2026 the business had simply run out of cash flow and was seeking sources of additional investment needed to cover losses until the business crossed into profitability.”
The joint administrators added that their priority was now "to identify any business assets and realise maximum value from their sale, especially the valuable intellectual property assets built up over the years of development, to the benefit of creditors”.
In the year to December 31 2024, pureLiFi Limited’s fixed assets were valued at approximately £3.5 million and current assets at £6.3 million. Net liabilities, however, stood at £28.8 million.
