Administrators are seeking buyers for the business and assets of Cushendall and Ballymena-based potato supplier and hand-cooked crisps maker Glens of Antrim Potatoes after the long-established business ceased trading.
Founded in 1972 as a grower and packer of potatoes for supermarkets and grocery chains across Ireland, the business subsequently expanded into producing a range of hand-cooked potato crisps under the Glens of Antrim Crisps brand.
The company, which operated from sites in Cushendall and Ballymena and employed 95 staff, fell into administration on September 21 2026. According to administrators, the wider agri-food sector has endured significant challenges in recent years, with businesses throughout the supply chain impacted by major input cost increases.
These pressures were described as having a “significant and detrimental impact” on Glens of Antrim’s cashflow. Directors subsequently explored a range of options, but with no solvent options available, decided to request the appointment of joint administrators.
Following the appointment, the company has ceased trading, with the majority of its employees made redundant - excluding a small skeleton staff retained to assist the administrators.
One of the company’s joint administrators commented: "Glens of Antrim has been growing and supplying potatoes across Ireland for over 50 years, so this is a tremendously sad outcome for the business, its dedicated team, the agri-food sector in Northern Ireland, and the wider community in Ballymena and Cushendall."
In accounts for the year to July 31 2025, Glens of Antrim Potatoes Limited reported turnover of £13.8 million, down from £14.4 million a year earlier, but recovered from an operating loss of over £353,000 to record a profit of more than £985,000.
At the time, the company’s fixed assets were valued at £5 million and current assets at £3.3 million, with net assets totalling close to £2.5 million.
